How to Spot an Original Samsung or iPhone (Fake Phone Checklist) 3

Fake and refurbished phones are sold as new every day. These checks take a few minutes and work for both Samsung and iPhone.

Checks that work on any phone

1. IMEI: dial *#06# and compare with the number on the box and the phone’s label. A mismatch is a warning sign.
2. Sealed packaging: a new phone arrives factory-sealed.
3. Model and storage: Settings, About phone. Make sure it matches what you paid for.
4. Build and screen: check the screen, buttons, ports and cameras. A new phone should feel solid, with no loose parts.
5. Purchase proof: a receipt and written warranty from a shop you can find again.

Extra checks for Samsung

• Open the Samsung Members app and run the built-in diagnostics to test the screen, sensors, battery and cameras.
• Check that the software version and model number in Settings match the box.
• Be wary of very cheap listings for a new model. If a brand-new Galaxy costs far less than everywhere else, it is probably not what it claims to be.

Extra checks for iPhone

• Go to Settings, General, About and note the serial number. Enter it on Apple’s official coverage check page to confirm the model and warranty status.
• Check that the storage and model shown in About match the box.
• Watch for a phone that is locked to another account or asks for someone else’s Apple ID. Never buy one.

New, UK-used and refurbished are different

All three are sold in Nigeria, and used or refurbished phones are not automatically bad. The problem is when they are sold as new. Ask the seller directly and get the answer on your receipt.
